The "6 Month Rule"

Today, I answer your question about how to work smarter…with a tip from Smosh (26M+ subscribers).

Q: I’m so overwhelmed with everything I need to do to run my socials. I’ve tried hiring people, but they don’t last more than a few weeks. Any advice?

A: Try Smosh’s “6 Month Rule.” Too many creators think hiring someone instantly frees up their time. 

The opposite is true. 

New hires actually demand more of your time before they lighten your load. 

Smosh’s Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox said it best during our interview:

“When I'm hiring someone new, I expect to work really closely with them for about 6 months or so before they fully understand the way that I feel things should be done,” Padilla said.

“I think some YouTubers give up before that point,” Hecox added. “They’re like ‘Yeah, I hired an editor, but they didn’t really like get it’ or ‘I could do it better,’” 

Hiring is an investment. Not just your money, but time and energy. Make sure you can carve out those extra hours for training. Especially on YouTube where it will take time for a new hire to understand your style and creativity. 

Bottom Line: Hiring is a marathon, not a sprint. Invest the time now, reap the rewards later.
